By Stephen Sterling

Tarot Awareness: Exploring the Spiritual Path

Have you ever looked at the mysterious symbols on the Tarot cards and wondered what they meant? Or perhaps you have read the Tarot for others for many years but still don't understand how to use them for meditation and spiritual development. Or perhaps you use the intense imagery of the Tarot for meditation, but don't think it is "appropriate" to use this mystical tool for readings.

Well, now you can learn the meaning of the symbols for spiritual development and for giving great readings in Stephen Walter Sterling's Tarot Awareness.

For hundreds of years, people have marveled at the beauty of the symbolism found on the many different decks of Tarot cards and pondered the mysteries of the cards' symbolism. Today there are hundreds of Tarot decks, but the cards are mainly used for one of two reasons: divination (giving "readings") and spiritual development.

Now, Stephen Walter Sterling, a spiritual counselor and teacher who has used the Tarot for more than twenty years, combines both in a book that is spiritual and practical, Tarot Awareness.

While spirituality fills the Tarot deck like incense fills a room, it is in the 22 illustrated cards of the Major Arcana that spiritual guidance reaches its high point. For each of the Major Arcana cards, Sterling not only gives the astrological correspondence and Hebrew letter, but also gives the meanings of those. For example we learn that card III, the Empress, astrologically corresponds to Venus. This is "the creative, harmonious aspect of personality. The Hebrew letter is daleth, which means 'door.'" In this case the door is "the passageway through which all creation emerges within and without, incarnating, and evolving." So were this card to come up while meditating on the future, you could say that you are in a period where you are evolving into a new, more harmonious person.

Next we learn about the "Inner Atmosphere" of each card. This is followed by a statement which the card (or main character on the card) might tell you. Then there is a quotation from a famous source which represents the nature of the card.

Each card also presents a challenge to your future spiritual evolution. Sterling describes that challenge for each card. He then gives a visualization based on the meaning of the card which you can meditate upon. Finally, the "General Atmosphere" of the card is revealed.

Then the book describes how to interpret the card in a reading, both in the upright and reversed position.

The 56 cards of the Minor Arcana are a continuation for the seeker who has journeyed through the Major Arcana. They represent motion through the four worlds: spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical. The Major Arcana allows you to explore your inner landscape: the various aspects of consciousness through which your soul expresses itself. It leads to growth and transformation through self-examination. The Minor Arcana shows you how the soul becomes engaged in a labyrinth of human experiences. It covers the same types of information, but since it is more physical the book does not need to go into as great depth.

Then the book gives five different types of readings which you can work with. Examples of readings and interpretations are given. One of the most valuable sections of this book discusses the question of proximity: how you interpret cards as they relate to each other as opposed to the way they relate to their position in the spread. Although many writers have discussed the importance of this, few have gone into the depth found here.

All in all, this is an important book for new Tarot readers and experts alike.
